Summer is here in Colorado! Today the temperatures are expected to be getting up into the 90's and some of my lettuce ( the lettuce that survived the 5 foot snows of April) is almost ready for salad. The snow should be melting up in the high country so that we can gain access to the higher elevations, kids are out of school and it is time to lighten our schedule a bit and enjoy the great outdoors.

That said, make sure to protect your skin, and to hydrate well if you are going to visit the higher elevations. I will be posting my annual update for skin protection here as well as other hints on how to stay healthy in the summer!

Big News! HB 1111 was signed into law by our governor last Weds June 5th. This bill protects your right to healthcare choice in Colorado by protecting your right to have a Registered Naturopathic Doctor on your healthcare team.

I also will be attending another conference on Naturopathic Oncology this coming July in Keystone, Colorado, with a focus on Breast Cancer.

 All About Vitamin D!
You gotta have it! Vit D Fact Sheet

Laboratory and animal evidence as well as epidemiologic data suggest that vitamin D status could affect cancer risk. Strong biological and mechanistic bases indicate that vitamin D plays a role in the prevention of colon, prostate, and breast cancers. Emerging epidemiologic data suggest that vitamin D may have a protective effect against colon cancer, but the data are not as strong for a protective effect against prostate and breast cancer, and are variable for cancers at other sites [1,46,47]. Studies do not consistently show a protective or no effect, however. One study of Finnish smokers, for example, found that subjects in the highest quintile of baseline vitamin D status had a threefold higher risk of developing pancreatic cancer [48]. A recent review found an increased risk of pancreatic cancer associated with high levels of serum 25(OH)D (≥100 nmol/L or ≥40 ng/mL) From the National Institute of Health, Office of Dietary Supplements
