Welcome to February. This time of the year always seems to open up new possibilities since here in Colorado there is still usually lots of snow (especially this year) and the days get longer so we can enjoy the snow longer! Also between blizzards, the weather is usually quite mild.

This month's issue is heart focused as many of us associate the heart with Valentine's Day. One of the main ways to protect your heart is to watch your sleep, stress levels, and diet. This may seem obvious, and while we cannot control all of the stress in our lives, we can certainly make an effort avoid the unnecessary stresses and situations, and we can utilize improved coping mechanisms for dealing with the stress that we have. Also, by adding some very basic nutritional supplements to our diet we can improve our heart health such as L-carnitine, CoQ 10, and fish oil. If you are carrying extra weight, you can make changes in your diet and lifestyle to reduce that weight. I offer a very effective weight loss program that is now available long distance through skype. It works and I enjoy watching my patients shrink before my very eyes.

 Too Much or Too Little Salt Tied to Heart Risk

red rose A new study suggests that in people with heart disease, eating too much salt is linked to a higher risk of heart-related hospitalizations and deaths -- but so is eating too little.

The findings are the latest addition to the cloudy picture of the role of salt in heart risks, but the study's lead researcher said he believes they actually help make it clearer. From Reuters

 Hawthorne Berry as a Nutritive Herb for the Treatment and Prevention of Heart Conditions

Hawthorn contains many substances that may benefit the heart. These antioxidant flavonoids -- including OPCs -- may help dilate blood vessels, improve blood flow, and protect the blood vessels from damage. The berries, leaves, and flowers of the hawthorn plant have been used for medicinal purposes.  CoEnzyme Q10 and Energy Production

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a substance that' s found naturally in the body and helps convert food into energy. CoQ10 is found in almost every cell in the body, and it is a powerful antioxidant.

Antioxidants fight damaging particles in the body known as free radicals, which damage cell membranes, tamper with DNA, and even cause cell death. Scientists believe free radicals contribute to the aging process, as well as a number of health problems, including heart disease and cancer. Antioxidants, such as CoQ10, can neutralize free radicals and may reduce or even help prevent some of the damage they cause.

Doctors have long warned patients that stress is bad for the heart. Now new research provides direct evidence to back up the warning.
